Epiphytic
2020
Epiphytic is an improvisational vortex of evolving, crystalline FM phase geometry in 7-Limit Just intonation. A stylistic shift from Friedman’s previous releases, the album eschews percussion in favour of an intense pulsing spectrality, situating the music both on the fringes of club culture and in the concert hall. The title—Epiphytic—refers to a type of plant that grows on the surface of another, non-parasitically, and is a metaphor for the way the music’s interlacing and divergent arpeggiations co-exist, forming a larger harmonic structure. The EP was recorded in a single take and was only edited in order to be fit on a vinyl record.
