In Search of Magic -
A New Proposal for the Constitution of Iceland
2020
Score for a Multi-Vocal Music and Visual Art Performance
by Olafur Olafsson and Libia Castro
—
In Search of Magic invited a large and diverse group of composers, musicians, artists, civil organisations, activists and members of the public to collectively create a polyphonic composition and performance of the 114 articles of a new, as of yet unratified version of the Icelandic constitution.
Friedman’s contribution was scored for four choirs, a bell ensemble and three soloists; it employed his notion of Performative Analytics to articulate the hierarchy of concepts and values underpinning constitutional language and to question how their ownership is shared.
Commissioned by Cycle Music and Arts Festival and Reykjavik Arts Festival.
